We say it to kids about a thousand times before they turn ten. Be nice. Be nice to your sister, be nice to the new kid, be nice, be nice, be nice. It is well-meaning. It is also not the thing that stops bullying. Because here is a distinction almost nobody makes clear to children, and it matters enormously. Nice and kind are not the same word. October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and this year I want to skip the posters and the slogans and talk about how to stop bul
