Every year around Grandparents Day, the internet fills up with soft-focus tributes about how polite everyone used to be. I am not really interested in that version. Nostalgia is easy, and it does not teach anyone anything. What I am interested in is this. Our grandparents ran on a set of small social skills that genuinely worked, not because they were better people, but because they treated a handful of ordinary courtesies as non-negotiable.
